Ying Liu is a Boya Distinguished Professor at Peking University, Vice Dean of the College of Future Technology, and a New Cornerstone Investigator. She earned her Bachelor's degree in Biochemistry from Nanjing University in 2006 and completed her Ph.D. in Biochemistry at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in 2011. From 2011 to 2013, she conducted postdoctoral research at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School. Since December 2013, she has been a faculty member at the Institute of Molecular Medicine (now part of the College of Future Technology) at Peking University, where she has held the positions of tenure-track assistant professor, associate professor, and full professor.
Her research focuses on metabolism and aging, with particular emphasis on the mechanisms by which cells sense nutrient signals and respond to mitochondrial stress. 1) She discovered a novel leucine sensor, SAR1B, and identified new mechanisms by which cells detect amino acid and glucose levels, revealing the crucial roles of these proteins in regulating glucose and lipid metabolism, cancer development, and aging. 2) She introduced the concept of mitochondrial surveillance and has systematically investigated the mechanisms by which cells, tissues, and organisms sense mitochondrial stress and energy deprivation.
She has been recognized as an International Research Scholar by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) and as a recipient of the National Outstanding Young Scientist Fund. She serves on the Advisory Board of Molecular Cell. In addition, she has received several honors, including the inaugural Xplorer Prize, the China Youth Female Scientist Award, the Tan Jiazhen Life Science Innovation Award, and others.
