A postdoctoral fellow position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Kun Yang in the Division of Chemical Biology and Medicinal Chemistry at College of Pharmacy in University of Texas at Austin. We are interested in studying the DNA-protein cross-links (DPC), a type of extremely cytotoxic and mutagenic DNA damage. DPCs are induced by both endogenous sources and various physical and chemical agents including ionizing radiation, UV light, transition metal ions, environmental contaminants, and common anticancer drugs (e.g. nitrogen mustards and platinum compounds). Our major research questions include: 1). What are the biological effects of DPCs? 2). How are DPCs repaired? 3). How is DPC repair regulated by posttranslational protein modifications? 4). Can we develop small molecules to inhibit DPC repair? We will utilize combined tools of biochemistry, molecular & cellular biology, proteomics and synthetic chemistry to address these questions. We believe our research will largely expand our fundamental knowledge on the biological effects and repair of DPCs, as well as help develop strategies to inhibit DPC repair for synergizing the current DPC inducing drugs in chemotherapy.
Open position: We are looking for a highly motivated and skilled postdoc candidate with a strong background in protein & nucleic acid biochemistry, molecular & cellular biology, and/or synthetic chemistry. The anticipated starting date is between October and December of 2019. This position is available for a term of one year with a high possibility of extension for 2-3 years. A competitive salary (NIH guide, https://www.niaid.nih.gov/grants-contracts/salary-cap-stipends) and benefits package will be provided. Candidates should hold a Ph.D. in biology, chemistry or other relevant disciplines. Working experience with small interfering RNA (siRNA), chromatin biology, protein engineering, proteomics and/or organic synthesis is highly preferred. Excellent English communication and writing skills are required. Interested applicants should submit a summary of research experience and CV to Dr. Kun Yang (kyang37@jhu.edu).
The PI: Dr. Kun Yang will join the Division of Chemical Biology and Medicinal Chemistry at College of Pharmacy in University of Texas at Austin as an assistant professor on August 19th, 2019. He obtained his B.S. in Biology from Sichuan University in 2010. In 2016, he received his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from University of Delaware under the supervision of Dr. Zhihao Zhuang. Thereafter, he joined Dr. Marc Greenberg’s group in the Department of Chemistry at Johns Hopkins University as a postdoctoral fellow. His research interest includes DNA damage and repair, posttranslational protein modifications and protein inhibitor development. For more information, please see his CV below.
